University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently approved a proposal to launch scholarships for candidates qualifying the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2014. Earlier All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), was providing GATE qualified postgraduate engineering students with a scholarship of Rs 8,000 per month, however as the regulation of GATE has been undertaken by UGC, a new scholarship from UGC is likely to be launched. The UGC scholarship will be effective for all Universities and Colleges for the Master of Engineering (ME) and Master of Technology (M Tech) courses for GATE qualified candidates.
In order to apply for scholarships and/or financial aid for Masters degree programmes and PhD programmes in engineering, technology, architecture and other relevant branches of science in institutes recognized by the government, a valid GATE score is essential. However a student may only accept scholarship from a single source.
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Science with GATE 2014 being convened by IIT Kharagpur. The examinations were held from February 2, 2014 to March 2, 2014 and the results are expected by March 28, 2014. GATE scores are used for admission to post graduate courses in the fields of technology. Also several Indian Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have started considering GATE scores for recruiting candidates.
